As part of a Youth for Understanding Program, Steven Wardell lived with a Japanese family for a summer, attending a local high school. Raising Songs and Laughters: Life Among Japan’s New Young, published in 1994, is his diary for that period, says The School Library Journal. The review goes on to say, “Young adults will find that the individual portraits as well as the overall presentation challenges American stereotypes of the Japanese.”
