Philip Sendak was the father of beloved children’s book author and illustrator—and Ridgefielder—Maurice Sendak. When the elder Sendak was 75 years old, his son suggested that he write a story. The story became In Grandpa’s House, which includes pictures drawn by his accomplished son. The story starts with Philip describing his own childhood in a shtetl in Poland, and then relates a story he was told by his own father. This story-within-a-story tells of a boy named David who, after the death of his grandfather, has many adventures as a magical bird flies him in search of his disappeared parents.
