As an author and professor, Balmer has dedicated his career to furthering America's understanding of various religions. A prize-winning historian, Emmy Award nominee and Episcopal priest, through his writing he attempts to uncover the myths and stereotypes surrounding religion. Balmer is a professor of American religious history at Barnard College, and has taught at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. His 1992 documentary for PBS, Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory, based on his book of the same title, was nominated for an Emmy for script-writing and hosting. He also wrote, produced, and hosted Crusade: The Life of Billy Graham (PBS, 1993), and “In The Beginning: The Creationist Controversy, PBS 1994.
